Continuing their family tradition of encouraging support for LA Opera during the holidays, Paul and Marybelle Musco have announced a matching gift challenge.  Any donation received by December 31 will be matched $2 for every $1 donated up to $500,000.

For Paul and Marybelle Musco, supporting opera is an integral part of their lives. As a boy growing up in Rhode Island, Paul’s Italian immigrant parents were opera lovers and insisted that their children gather around the radio for the Metropolitan Opera broadcasts. “I guess it was osmosis, because I came to love opera and it has stayed with me personally ever since,” he recalls.

Marybelle Musco’s passion for the arts started when she was very young: as a six-year-old dance student in her native Illinois. “No matter how bad a day I’ve had, when I experience anything arts-related it immediately brightens my mood,” she says.

When the Muscos relocated to Orange County—where Paul founded Gemini Industries, the largest company in the world engaged in the recovery of spent precious metals for the petrochemical industry—they immediately established themselves as leading philanthropists in their community. They have been long-time supporters of opera both in Orange County and here in Los Angeles.

Paul was elected to the LA Opera board in 2004 and currently serves as Vice Chairman. The Muscos joined the 20th Anniversary Angels leadership giving group and underwrote their first LA Opera production—Carmen in 2004.

Their passion for opera led them to one of their most important achievements:  On March 19, 2016, Plácido Domingo performed and led the celebration for the dedication of the new, state-of-the-art Marybelle and S. Paul Musco Center for the Arts at Chapman University.

“Paul and Marybelle are long-time and beloved members of our LA Opera family.  Their generous support has inspired many others to give to opera and the arts. They have helped bring the beauty and power of opera to countless individuals and families throughout Southern California.” said Plácido Domingo.

LA Opera extends its gratitude to Paul and Marybelle for their extraordinary support and for being such a special part of the LA Opera family.
