The College Advisory Committee – Inspiring the Next Generation of Opera Lovers

The College Advisory Committee invites graduate and undergraduate students to be a part of Team Opera! They volunteer at events, attend exclusive master classes and backstage tours, all while learning about potential careers in the arts. Committee members input is a vital part of how we plan future college programming at LA Opera. Get to know two of our members below!

Sadai Servin is a recent graduate of Los Angeles City College and will be attending University of the Pacific this fall as a major in business and vocal performance. Although she is passionate about a career in music, her immediate post-graduation plans are to join the Peace Corps. She is also excited to be joining LA Opera’s Education and Community Engagement Department this summer as their LA County Arts Intern!

LA Opera: What inspired you to join the College Advisory Committee?

Sadai Servin: The ability to get insight on how it would be like to work in an opera house. It is also a great way to meet other motivated students who share the love for classical music and want to give back to their community.”

LAO: What have you learned from the experience?

Sadai: I’ve learned so much, especially on how to engage with students and the surrounding community, leadership and communication skills. I never knew how much labor was put into making a single opera production.

Tate Shoebridge is a current CalArts student working towards a masters in fine arts in oboe performance. After graduation, he plans continue his education and obtain a DMA in oboe performance or start a career as a freelance oboist. This summer, Tate will be joining LA Opera’s Opera Camp as a Camp Counselor.

LAO: What inspired you to join the College Advisory Committee?

Tate Shoebridge: I love the opera, so when I discovered the College Advisory Committee I jumped at the opportunity to join.

LAO: What have you learned from the experience?

Tate: The most inspiring moment was to see Jonah and the Whale come to life in the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. Of course, it has been great to work with so many incredible individuals from other colleges.
