Iconic Productions: Ariadne auf Naxos

“Ariadne evokes the loneliness and solitude of the sea and of the human soul, but it also conveys the joys and agony of creating musical theater and the ever-present tension between art and commerce.” – Ariadne auf Naxos (2004) Director William Friedkin

LA Opera presented a new production of Richard Strauss’ Ariadne auf Naxos in 2004. Directed by William Friedkin, the production is memorable for the seamless way in which Friedkin handled both the tragic and comic elements of Ariadne. The story follows a troupe of comediennes, led by the feisty Zerbinetta, as they try to cheer up Ariadne, who has recently been abandoned by her lover Theseus.
