Opera Sisters

Sisters have a special bond that cannot be compared to any other relationship. They can be your best friend from the start or even your special confidante when there’s something you’re bursting to talk about, but can’t seem to find the words. Sisters can also steer you in the direction of the arts. For Katie and Annie Lee, all this is true.

Four years ago, a friend’s suggestion led Katie to join opera camp.  She always loved to perform and opera camp has given her a more intense musical experience than the theater camps she previously attended. Inspired by her experience at opera camp, Katie has ascended to Lead Student Ambassador within LA Opera’s 90012 Program. The program awards mini-subscriptions to high school students and a parent/adult/guardian of their choice to see opera season productions. Additionally, the program also includes behind-the-scenes events to create unique operatic experiences to be shared and treasured by all participants. As Lead Student Ambassador, Katie visits various high schools in the region to discuss the program and LA Opera. She greatly enjoys opportunities to expose new generations to the joys of opera.

Katie brought this position home with her when she introduced her sister Annie to opera (though the girls did grow up listening to classical music). When speaking with Katie and Annie (15 and 10, respectively) you can tell how much the eloquent Katie enjoys opera; you can also tell how much Annie admires her sister. It was Katie’s love of opera and great experience in the camp that led Annie to join last year. Both girls enjoy having a shared camp experience and treasure getting to do things together – such as warming up during their first joint performance last summer.
