LA Opera has a robust array of programs that get kids, teens, and young adults excited about opera. Several of these programs – Operawise, Opera Prep – bring students to the opera to meet with the company’s talented arts professionals. While these programs offer students the ability to network with people in the arts community, another program – the College Advisory Committee – takes networking to the next level. It offers students the opportunity to gain leadership skills while they help promote a major arts institution.
The College Advisory Committee is all about advocating and promoting opera. If you’re a student and you want to learn about marketing, community engagement, public relations, arts education, music, and/or theater and use your skills and influence, then this is definitely a committee to join. You’ll work closely with LA Opera staff to help shape the company’s future college programming, while acting as ambassadors for opera on your campus and at LA Opera events. Committee members have access to exclusive behind-the-scenes experiences, volunteer opportunities, regular sessions for professional development and a master class with a LA Opera arts professional.
The Committee is a great way to make career connections, as some members, like Scripps College junior Madeline Sy, have learned. Sy first learned about LA Opera through Operawise, when she came to an opera dress rehearsal with the rest of her college class. Once on the College Advisory Committee, her dedication led her to a summer internship this past year with LA Opera’s development department.
“There’s so much potential for what the College Advisory Committee can achieve. I appreciate working with LA Opera staff, because they are very receptive to our feedback about outreach to college students. It is very refreshing!”
This season of the College Advisory Committee kicks off with its first meeting on Saturday, September 24th. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to the join the program! Apply today (deadline September 19).
