Thousands of people just like you come to LA Opera each year to experience the magnificence that can only be found in opera. Through world-class staging and bold experimentation, opera has something for everyone, regardless of age, musical preferences or means. Here are some of the opera experiences you can give as gifts to your friends and family this holiday season.

Hop on Mozart’s Orient Express with The Abduction from the Seraglio

If you’re a fan of screwball comedies, this is the opera for you. Updated to the Roaring Twenties, this riotous staging marries the brilliance of Mozart’s comic gem with the flair of a classic Hollywood comedy. En route from Istanbul to Paris, two beautiful damsels in distress are held captive aboard the luxurious Orient Express by a notorious Ottoman royal. It’s up to their faithful lovers to rescue them before it’s too late!

Fall in Love with the Seductive Salome

Adapted from the scandalous play by Oscar Wilde, Salome is a seductively beautiful tapestry of the subconscious. The princess Salome becomes infatuated by her stepfather’s prisoner, John the Baptist and she determines to have him…whatever the cost. One of the great singing actresses of our time, Patricia Racette returns in the title role, with Tómas Tómasson (star of The Flying Dutchman in 2013) as the doomed prophet. James Conlon conducts the epic, opulent score by Richard Strauss, a true orchestral showpiece.

Journey Through A Poet’s Past Love Affairs in The Tales of Hoffmann

Urged on by his drinking buddies, Hoffmann recounts the stories of the women who captured his heart and taunt/torture his thoughts—wind-up doll Olympia, conniving Giulietta, fragile Antonia and elusive Stella. Hoffmann’s doomed pursuit of romance, foiled by sinister figures of darkness at every turn, ultimately lead him to a poet’s artistic salvation. Plácido Domingo conducts Offenbach’s luminous score.

See How Far A Woman Will Go to Save the Man She Loves

In Tosca, a fiery prima donna is forced to play a role she never imagined when she becomes trapped between her allegiance to her rebel lover and the scheming of a treacherous police chief who will stop at nothing in his lust for her. The explosive conflict between these three unforgettable characters comes to a hair-raising conclusion in one of opera’s bloodiest, most intense dramas.
